Getting Started

Welcome to the Edu-pal! We're really excited to have you with us on this journey to transform online-learning. To get started, kindly follow the quick steps listed below.

  1. Open Chrome on MacOS or Windows and visit the extension. Alternatively, type Edu-pal in the Chrome Web Store.

  2. Click "Add to Chrome" and accept the permissions. Visit our privacy policy to see how we collect data.

  3. Make sure you are signed into a Google account that can start Google Meet meetings. Start a new meeting at meet.google.com.

  4. Click the blue circular button at the top-right corner, then click the right arrow icon on the purple menu bar in the sidebar.

  5. Select "student" to answer questions, and select "teacher" to ask questions. Teachers may wish to join their meeting in another window as a "student" to see how the questions turn out.

The steps below are a walkthrough of Edu-pal's core features. Feel free to explore yourself at this point!

Edu-pal for Teachers

  1. Hover the blue circular button to select the type of question or use the dropdown menu in the “Create” tab of the sidebar.

  2. All the fields are optional. You can hit send immediately and the question will be streamed to the students’ Meet window as a notification. Alternatively, you can type out the question and select an answer (or answers for Multi-Select).

  3. In the “Question” tab, you can see summarised results of all the questions you have asked in a bar graph.

  4. Click on the right arrow icon on any of the cards, which will show all student responses for a given question. Click the left arrow icon to return to the summarised view.

Edu-pal for Students

  1. If the teacher sends a question, a notification should appear at the bottom-right corner. You can click the dropdown to expand and answer right away, or open the sidebar and click the “Question” tab and answer there.

  2. After you submit, you should see a notice telling you whether you got the question right. If the teacher did not set an answer, there may be no answer.

  3. Click the “Leaderboard” tab to view your rank and number of points scored on the class leaderboard.

If you face any troubles or issues, do not hesitate to contact us at edupal.group@gmail.com. We usually respond within a day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does everyone need to install this extension?

Yes. All students and teachers have to install this extension in order to send questions and answers.

Can I install this for my whole team?

Yes! Your GSuite admin will be able to install the extension across all users accounts in your team. Find more information here.

Can I use this outside Chrome?

For now, the extension only works on Chrome. We will try to support Firefox in the future, so stay tuned!

Can I get this on my phone or on other video conferencing platforms (e.g. Zoom)?

Unfortunately, iOS and Android do not support the extension format, and none of the other video conferencing platforms allow us to integrate directly into their services, so the extension is not available on phones or other platforms. However, our long-term vision is to build the features on the extension, and so much more, on our own site, so stay tuned!

Do you collect any personal data?

Your security and privacy is of great importance to us. In short, we collect the bare minimum required to make Edu-pal work. The most sensitive data we collect is your publicly available Google Account ID and email address, which we collect so you show up as the same student on the leaderboard and the same teacher asking questions if you rejoin a Google Meet call. This data is stored on industry-standard secure sites with built-in data protection mechanisms. Honestly, we have no intention to ever disclose your personal data to third parties unless required by law, and we will comply with any personal or legal request to remove your data. Contact us by email or visit our Data Protection Notice to learn more.

Troubleshooting

A notice says 'Whoops! Edu-pal lost connection. We are trying again…'

If you have an unstable network connection, this may happen from time to time. You should see a notice saying “Edu-pal has reconnected!” within 30 seconds. If this does not happen, check your network connection and rejoin the meeting.

A notice says Something went wrong. Please click OK to refresh Edu-pal.

This means Edu-pal crashed for an unknown reason. Please contact us and retrace exactly what you did leading to the crash, so we can debug this issue immediately.

The student submits an answer, but nothing happens. The loading screen hangs.

Rejoin the meeting.

The teacher asks a question, but none of the students receive the question.

Rejoin the meeting. If the problem persists, go to the Settings panel in the menu bar and switch the role to student, then back to teacher.

Someone else (not the teacher) wants to ask questions. What should we do?

To prevent spamming, only the teacher can ask questions, and only one user can be a teacher. The teacher must change their role to a student in the “Settings” tab of the sidebar, and the other user must change their role to a teacher.

The leaderboard reset. What happened?

For now, the class leaderboard resets after each meeting. I know, it’s a shame. That’s why we’re working on a leaderboard and game-based learning system that persists between meetings, so the game keeps going even after class time!

I have a suggestion for the extension.

It’s always great to hear from our users on how we can improve! Kindly contact us directly by email and we will be in touch.

If you are still having issues, please let us know at edupal.group@gmail.com. This is a beta release, which means there may be bugs. Please let us know about them, so we can fix them quickly and deliver the best possible experience to all our users.
